Photojournalism

Growing up in a generation where I've had a smartphone for most of my life, I have always been taking pictures. They were never journalistic, always of family, friends, or a pretty sunset, but those pictures helped tell the story of my life. As a part of my goal to become a  multimedia journalist I began taking photos for KnightMedia. It started with easier stationary photoshoots, like the fall choir concert, and progressed to more difficult shoots like boys basketball. I am still very new to photography and understand that I have a lot of room to grow as a photographer. However, the photo is only half the story. Caption writing is something that almost came natural as a journalist and a sports fan. Growing up playing sports helped me recognize what athletes were doing in events and how best to capture that moment by using the correct terminology. Just like how Journalism has helped my caption writing, learning how to write captions has strengthened my writing and use of Social Media. The cliché is: a picture speaks a thousand words, and learning how to show others stories over the last year has been an extremely rewarding expirence.

Prospect Choir returns to Kulieke Theater

This was my first attempt at photography, so I decided to take my journalistic strengths and combine them with the photos I took in an alternate story format.

Photo Albums

Cowboys, Chickens, and a Purple Plum Professor

In this photo album I took on the challenge of shooting the fall improv production: Comedy Sports. This show featured teams competing against each other in improvised events. There were many purely hilariously odd moments, which I attempted to capture in the photo album.

A “Madr-ical” Night

This photo album was another unique experience I was able to capture right at the start of the holidays. The Madrigal dinner has been a long-running tradition at Prospect for many years. I was invited to the dinner and had to dress the part as well. As an outsider to the madrigals and choir, it was exciting to learn and discover what the madrigal dinner was all about. This album taught me about telling a story through photos and captions. This was one of my personal favorite albums, and I got fed free dinner...

Prospect vs Elk Grove

This was one of my most challenging photoshoots just due to the sheer speed of a high school basketball game. The camera I was using also wasn't necessarily built for sports photography, but despite these challenges I was confident in the story I told through these photos. This album was the most fun I had writing captions, mainly thanks to my background in sports and how close I have become to the team through KnightMedia.

Prospect Media Day

This past August after talking with former teammates and friends who are playing Division I football, I noticed that they all talked about how cool their media days were. Those conversations gave me an idea. If Big 10 colleges can do media days why can't we? So that day in class I talked with two of my partners Nolan Hamilton and Charlie Dahlgren about the logistics of having a media day for Prospect. It turned out Charlie had a smoke machine that we could use, and we had access to any cameras we needed in class. The next issue we had to face was where to film the shoot. So, I found Mr. Morton who runs the plays and musicals at Prospect. He helped me find a time that the theater was open and showed me how to work the lights. Now we just needed to get a full team of football players to the theater. Luckily because I was a part of the football team I had access to our schedule and a connection with our head coach. So, we were able to do the media day shoot, and create content that we were able to use all season long. The footage that you see is a few uncut videos that I took. We then took that footage and turned it into GIFs for social media pages as well as using the footage in our pre-game hype reel.
